Choosing a PDF Generation API for Barcode Label Batches

Compare Gookit, PDFMonkey, CraftMyPDF, APITemplate.io, PDF Generator API and SheetsToLabels against a concrete label workflow.

Choose a PDF generation API by testing the document you need to produce. For barcode labels, that means physical dimensions, correct identifiers, copy counts and a reliable way to retrieve the finished file—not just a successful PDF response.

Gookit focuses on reusable label templates and per-record quantities. General document APIs are worth evaluating when the same integration must also create invoices, reports or other page layouts. This comparison helps you narrow that choice without treating every PDF product as equivalent.

Evidence: official product and pricing pages checked September 20, 2026. We tested Gookit’s three-label API job. Competitor capabilities below are documented claims, not results from equivalent hands-on tests. We publish Gookit, so use the shared test below to check our recommendation against your needs.

Give every tool the same task

Use two fictional products: Trail Bottle, SKU TB-1042, quantity two; Desk Tray, SKU DT-2006, quantity one. Produce one PDF with three nominal 50 × 30 mm pages. Each page should show the name, a Code 128 barcode and the readable SKU.

Then try a long product name, a SKU with leading zeros, an invalid quantity and a delayed job. Count the work required to get a usable file, including template construction, copy expansion, status handling and storage.

Gookit: start from label records and copies

Our verified example uses a stored template and two records with quantities 2 and 1. Submission returns a job ID; the caller checks it and downloads the completed PDF. It does not send a print command to your hardware.

The independent developer plan includes a one-time allowance for eligible accounts and a paid unlimited-output option, subject to job and rate limits. Use the current pricing page for the applicable plan. Test another product if your primary requirement is arbitrary HTML conversion or editing an existing PDF form.

PDFMonkey: evaluate document-oriented layouts

PDFMonkey documents both a visual Builder and HTML/CSS/Liquid templates. Its plan comparison counts documents and distinguishes retention periods. It is a candidate when your team already works with web-style templates and needs several document types. Verify barcode construction and copy layout with the shared fixture. CraftMyPDF: evaluate visual design across document types

CraftMyPDF documents a visual designer and REST generation for PDFs and images. Its pricing separates individual and team features. If non-developers maintain layouts, include editing a product field and changing label stock in your evaluation; do not judge only the first API call. REST documentation, pricing.

APITemplate.io: evaluate the editor and output mix

APITemplate.io documents multiple PDF-generation methods, including visual and HTML approaches, and separates PDF-only plans from image-plus-PDF plans. Choose the appropriate product before comparing quotas. Test how your records become repeated labels and how finished files reach your application. PDF generation methods, pricing.

PDF Generator API: evaluate the wider service set

PDF Generator API’s pricing page lists a template editor alongside HTML conversion, form filling and other PDF services. It defines document credits in five-page blocks. An embedded editor may also affect plan selection. These are relevant differences when label output is one part of a larger document system. Plan and credit definitions.

SheetsToLabels: evaluate another label-focused contract

SheetsToLabels documents reusable templates, a print layout per request and a direct PDF binary response. Its page describes final-page credits and idempotency keys. Those semantics differ from Gookit’s asynchronous job and label quantities; test response time, layout and retries with your own batch. Label Generation API.

Compare the billing unit, not just the plan headline

One job can contain two records, three labels and either one sheet page or three roll pages. “One PDF” is another possible unit. These counts can produce different costs under different services.

For a realistic estimate, write down your monthly records, copies per record, output pages, preview requests, retries and retention needs. Apply each provider’s current credit rules to that same workload. Include Make/n8n or storage costs separately if they are part of your setup. Currency, billing term and tax treatment also need to match before calling one plan cheaper.

When a label API alternative makes sense

If you are searching for a PDFMonkey, CraftMyPDF or APITemplate alternative specifically for inventory labels, test whether explicit copy counts and label dimensions reduce the code you maintain. That is a fit question, not proof that the broader tool is unsuitable.

If you already generate invoices and reports successfully, keeping that platform may be simpler. If you need PDF form filling, signing or complex flowing content, do not assume Gookit replaces those functions.

For a possible migration, retain the original template as a reference, rebuild one label, map its data fields, and compare the resulting size and barcode values. Existing vendor template IDs and formats do not transfer automatically. Switch one workflow only after output and recovery behavior pass your checks.
