Generate Label PDFs for Sheet and Thermal Layouts

Choose roll or sheet geometry, check label counts against PDF pages, and validate the file before printing on real stock.

Choose the template layout before you count PDF pages. A ROLL template produces one label per page; a SHEET template places several labels on a page. The same three requested copies can therefore produce three pages or one page.

Gookit generates the PDF. Your viewer, printer driver and stock settings determine the physical print, so check both the digital layout and the actual label sheet before a production batch.

Compare two concrete layouts

LayoutTemplateThree requested labels
Roll50 × 30 mm, ROLLThree pages, one label each
Generic A4 sheet50 × 30 mm labels, 3 columns × 8 rowsOne A4 page with three occupied slots

The supplied A4 layout is a generic example, not an Avery model or a printer certification. It uses 10 mm page margins and lets the renderer calculate spacing from page size, label size and grid. Match your actual stock rather than choosing it just because the page says A4.

One complete A4 page, with three occupied label positions. Generated through Gookit Label API and checked digitally; physical printing remains to be tested.

Read the geometry in the template

The sheet definition adds page and grid to the label dimensions:

{
"type": "SHEET",
"unit": "mm",
"width": 50,
"height": 30,
"page": {"width": 210, "height": 297, "margins": [10, 10, 10, 10]},
"grid": {"col": 3, "row": 8}
}

This is a geometry excerpt; use the complete downloadable template, which includes the elements. Margins are left, top, right and bottom. The current contract calculates SHEET spacing from the page, grid and margins; its gap field does not override that calculation.

Create this template through POST /templates, then use the returned ID with the same batch data as the roll example. Labels and pages are separate counts: the request still consumes three output labels even though the sheet has unused positions.

What about Avery stock?

The public preset catalog can help locate paper dimensions, but a catalog entry alone does not verify a particular model in your printer. Inspect its measurements and validation errors, then print a small alignment test on the intended sheet.

For partially used stock, this guide does not promise a start-at-slot option. Verify supported placement behavior before feeding an already-used sheet. An assumption about skipped positions can waste labels even when the PDF itself is valid.

What about Zebra or other thermal printers?

A matching PDF can be printed through a compatible viewer and driver workflow, but the API is not a printer driver and does not automatically convert a PDF into a device command language such as ZPL.

Set the correct label stock size, choose Actual Size or 100%, and check orientation. Disable fit-to-page behavior when it changes the intended dimensions. Validate with your actual printer model, driver and scanner before describing that configuration as supported.

The nominal 50 × 30 mm example uses a 142 × 85 point PDF page because the renderer rounds its coordinates. Measure the printed result when a tight tolerance matters.

Validate before increasing volume

  1. Count requested copies separately from PDF pages.
  2. Check visible names, SKUs and digital barcode values.
  3. Print one small batch on the intended stock.
  4. Inspect the first and last occupied positions for alignment.
  5. Scan the physical codes with the device used in the workflow.

Keep the tested template, printer settings and stock model together. A later change to geometry or scaling calls for another small physical test.
